Tesla may be feeling more heat from an old rival in the coming years. Toyota the Japanese car company that pioneered hybrid electric vehicles with its Prius model, said Wednesday that it will invest heavily in battery-electric vehicles, artificial intelligence, and hydrogen-fuel technology. Tesla which made all-electric cars famous, has been going through a rough patch as it faces down Chinese firms such as BYD that offer cheaper all-battery cars.
FEATURE Tesla stock paused its recent march higher after investors digested a bevy of news items Tuesday. Shares fell 3.8% to close Tuesday at $177.81, while the rose 0.1% and the fell 0.1%. Falling sales from its Chinese plant, weak sales from peers, and more details about a National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, or NHTSA, investigation into Tesla’s driver-assistance feature weighed on investor sentiment.
